What is PINT-AE?

PINT-AE (PEPPOL International Model — UAE Edition) is the UAE's e-invoice standard. Built on PEPPOL's global framework and UBL 2.1, it defines exactly how electronic invoices must be structured for UAE tax compliance.

PINT-AE Invoice Structure

A compliant PINT-AE invoice includes:

Mandatory Header Fields

  • Invoice Number: Unique sequential identifier
  • Issue Date: Date the invoice was issued
  • Due Date: Payment due date
  • Currency Code: Must be AED for domestic invoices
  • Supplier TRN: Tax Registration Number of the seller
  • Buyer TRN: Tax Registration Number of the buyer (for B2B)

Line Item Requirements

Each invoice line must include:

  • Item description
  • Quantity and unit of measure
  • Unit price (exclusive of tax)
  • Tax category and rate
  • Line extension amount
  • Tax amount

Tax Summary

  • Taxable amount per tax category
  • Tax amount per category
  • Total tax amount
  • Invoice total (inclusive and exclusive of tax)

Validation Rules

PINT-AE enforces several validation rules:

  1. TRN Format: Must match FTA's registered TRN format
  2. Tax Calculations: Line totals must sum correctly to invoice totals
  3. Rounding: Maximum 2 decimal places for AED amounts
  4. Date Constraints: Issue date cannot be in the future
  5. Mandatory Fields: All required fields must be present and non-empty

Implementation Steps

Step 1: Assess Your Current State

Review your existing invoicing process: - What ERP system(s) generate your invoices? - What format are invoices currently in? - What fields are already captured?

Step 2: Gap Analysis

Compare your current invoice data with PINT-AE requirements: - Are all mandatory fields available? - Is TRN data stored correctly? - Are tax calculations automated?

Step 3: Choose Your Integration Path

  • Direct Implementation: Build PINT-AE formatting in-house
  • Middleware Platform: Use a platform like Taxver to handle conversion
  • ASP Direct: Some ASPs offer basic formatting services

Step 4: Test and Validate

Before going live: - Submit test invoices to the FTA sandbox - Validate all invoice types your business uses - Test error handling and rejection scenarios

Step 5: Go Live

Once testing passes: - Switch to production ASP connection - Monitor initial submissions closely - Set up alerts for validation failures

Common Pitfalls

  • Incorrect TRN formatting: Ensure TRNs include the country prefix
  • Tax rounding errors: Always round at the line level, then sum
  • Missing optional-but-expected fields: Some fields are technically optional but expected by the FTA
  • Date timezone issues: Always use UAE timezone (UTC+4) for dates
